Not all heart-related problems require surgery. Occasionally, with just a few lifestyle changes, medications or nonsurgical procedures these problems can be handled. However, surgery is often needed to address problems such as heart failure or diseased major blood vessels (such as the aorta) abnormal heart rhythms and so on.
What are some types of heart surgery? There are several types of heart surgery, but the most common ones include: Coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG): In CABG, also often known as the most common type of heart surgery — the surgeon takes a healthy artery or vein from some place else in your body and uses it to supply blood past the blocked coronary artery. The grafted artery or vein then creates a new path for blood to flow to the heart muscle. CABG is often referred to as heart bypass or coronary artery bypass surgery. Heart valve repair or replacement: Here, surgeons either repair the valve or replace it with either an artificial valve or a biological valve made from pig, cow or human heart tissue. Insertion of a pacemaker or an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD): In the event of arrhythmia, a condition in which the heart beats either too fast, too slow or with an irregular rhythm medicine is usually the first treatment option. If medication doesn’t work, a surgeon may then implant a pacemaker under the skin of the chest or abdomen, with sensors that detect abnormal heart beats and then uses electrical pulses to control the heart rhythm. An ICD works similarly, but instead sends an electric shock to restore a normal rhythm when it detects a dangerous arrhythmia.
